Tears in the Rainforest: A Lost Flower’s Rediscovery Marks a Win for Botany and Conservation

SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, a former elementary school gym teacher dropped to his knees in the mud and wept. After 13 years of false leads, dead phone batteries and the constant threat of tiger attacks, Septian “Deki” Andriki had finally found what he was hunting: a living bloom of Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic flower unseen in the wild for more than a decade.

Andriki, now a self-taught rafflesia hunter, had been chasing tips across Indonesia since 2012. The breakthrough came from a local resident who passed along a lead earlier this year, directing Andriki, Oxford Botanic Garden’s Chris Thorogood, and Indonesian researcher Joko Ridho Witono into a nearly day-long trek through dense, tiger-inhabited rainforest in Sijunjung Regency. When the team arrived and saw the blood-red, white-speckled petals unfurling, Andriki was speechless.

“After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later said. “I just cried.”

The moment—captured on video and widely shared—became an instant viral sensation. But for botanists, the rediscovery was a serious scientific milestone, not just a heartwarming spectacle.

A Biological Anomaly

Rafflesia hasseltii is one of roughly 42 species in the genus Rafflesia, a family of chlorophyll-less parasites found only in the rainforests of Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Brunei. Lacking leaves, stems and roots, rafflesias live inside host vines for years, emerging only for a brief, pungent bloom that can span nearly a meter across and smells like rotting meat to attract carrion flies.

That combination of rarity and biological strangeness makes rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists—and nearly impossible to protect. Researchers estimate about two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside any legally protected forest, exposed to logging and land conversion with no formal safeguards.

The 2025 rediscovery was part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford, involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The team is collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia, hoping genetics can explain why the plant blooms so rarely and unpredictably in the wild.

The Quiet Machine of Discovery

While the Sumatran rafflesia grabbed headlines, it represents only the most photogenic example of a far larger enterprise: the unglamorous work of naming new plant species—many for the first time, some possibly for the last.

At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists formally describe roughly 200 new plant species each year—about one in every 10 named worldwide. In 2025, the Garden highlighted discoveries including a new Costa Rican cactus, a new daisy relative from Peru, and a species honoring Bolivia’s bicentennial.

One find required two decades of patience. Entomologist William Haber handed a cactus cutting to retired curator Barry Hammel, suspecting it was distinct from the common moonlight cactus. The plant didn’t flower until years later in Hammel’s Costa Rican yard, confirming a new species in the genus Selenicereus—believed likely endangered.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus published in 2025. Among the most striking was Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis—the grape genus—built around two newly identified wild species from Chiapas, Mexico, with red flowers and stems dotted with pores. It marks only the third recognized grape subgenus in nearly a century, a significant recalibration for one of the world’s most economically important crops.

Discovery in Unexpected Places

Not all finds required an expedition. In Big Bend National Park, Texas, volunteer botanist Deb Manley spotted small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers between rocks—something she had never seen despite the park’s long survey history. She uploaded images to iNaturalist, triggering a chain of expert identification that led to an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil”—the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.

In Hawaii, researchers used a drone with a robotic collecting arm to reach a cliff face on Kauai inaccessible to humans. The drone returned samples of a previously unknown plant in the carnation family, named Schiedea waiahuluensis—possibly the first new plant species ever discovered by drone.

A Race Against Extinction

These discoveries tell two stories: one of persistence and luck, the other of sobering urgency. Many plants botanists find for the first time are already among the rarest on Earth—restricted to a single mountain range or cliff face—and often threatened by logging or habitat loss.

Naming a species is the necessary first step before any legal protection or conservation funding can exist. “A plant without a name is a plant without a defense,” botanists argue. Only after confirming Rafflesia hasseltii was alive could researchers begin advocating for stronger protections in forests where most known populations remain unprotected.

Scientists estimate thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition—a phenomenon called “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not just an inventory of nature’s surprises; it is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
